Bag-makers needed...
Could you help us turn recycled fabric into durable shopping bags? We need people skilled in cutting out, pinning and machining to help us make a stock of Penistone Carry-A-Bags on June 5th. This should be an enjoyable evening and a chance to get involved in the Penistone Carry-a-Bag Campaign.
Barnsley Hospice Shop will be supplying some recycled fabric, but we will still need more – if you have any old curtains or other strong fabric, please drop it off at the Barnsley Hospice Shop.

Help from the Town council...
At their March meeting, Penistone Town Council agreed to support Penistone Carry-A-Bag in principle (see our News item about it). In their April meeting, they very generously agreed to make a donation of £500 towards the scheme. Thank-you! We are not far off our fundraising total now - please contact us if you know of a local business who could help us out!
A plastic bag trawl...
On 26th April, supporters of Penistone Carry-A-Bag trawling for litter waded into the River Don and worked along about 300m of its banks at Springvale. We found 112 plastic carrier bags and 20 bin bags full of other rubbish which was mostly other plastic waste. We thank Barnsley MBC’s Neighbourhood Pride team who provided bags, litter pickers and gloves.

The problem with plastic...
Did you know that we use 2 million plastic bags in the Penistone District every year and each one could last over 500 years?
Yet on average, a plastic bag is only used for 12 minutes and only one in 200 is recycled.
More about plastic...
Penistone Carry-A-Bag
We are a group of local people who want to help Penistone cut down on the use of plastic carrier bags. This will reduce waste and harm to wildlife and make our local environment tidier.
Shoppers
We will provide information about the harm caused by plastic bags, and try to ensure every household in Penistone has its own fabric shopper.
Info for shoppers here
Traders
We will be helping traders find alternatives to plastic bags and ways to encourage their customers to bring their own bags.

Whether you are a shopper or a trader, we would love to have your support in making Penistone a greener and less wasteful place to live and work. Shoppers, please pledge your support on our Shopper's Form. A Trader's Form will follow after the public meeting, so your shop or business can sign up to Penistone Carry-A-Bag.
